Shelter to Soldier
Shelter to Soldier's mission brings trained rescue dogs together with veterans
to help both heal and move forward. They adopt carefully selected dogs
from local shelters and rescues, train them over 12-18 months to become
task-trained psychiatric service dogs, and then place them at no charge
with post-9/11 combat veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress (PTS),
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), or other injuries associated with traumatic service
experiences. It is estimated that one in five service members that deployed
during the OEF and OIF conflicts are diagnosed with PTS, and our nation
loses an average of 20 veterans to suicide every day. A trained assistance
dog provides a life-changing impact, and in many cases, a lifesaving one.
