Clemente-based R. Douglas Mansfield Architects on the
redo. Mansfield had worked with the Collins family in
the late 1990s, designing a new spa, fractional ownership
villas, and several homes. In 2012, the resort's new owners,
an investment group led by Jeff Jacobs, son of Qualcomm
founder Irwin Jacobs, tapped Mansfield for a $30 million
renovation. "ey were very interested in keeping the
ambience of what the Collins family had created but they
wanted to upgrade things and give the resort a fresh new
look to reflect their vision," Mansfield explains.
e renovation included major improvements to the
main clubhouse, including Veladora restaurant, e Pony
Room bar and restaurant, e Terrace Ballroom, a private
wine room, and a state-of-the-art kitchen. e firm also
revamped guest casitas and expanded fitness facilities,
adding an indoor-outdoor yoga tranquility pavilion. "We
worked very closely with Jeff Jacobs throughout the entire
design process," says Mansfield. "JJ typically gives us an
overall vision of what he wants to achieve and then he gives
us a long rope to create the vision." Jacobs is the resort's
operating partner with brother Hal, Doug Carlson, and
Jeffrey Essakow.
Jim Morton, the resort's original architect, had designed
the Collins family home in a Spanish hacienda style.
