On a somber note, our Ranch & Coast staff is mourning one of our own, Darlene G. Davies, our longtime Arts & Culture Editor, a historian and community leader who passed away recently at the age of 83. Davies was committed to myriad cultural and charitable institutions, and she received many awards and accolades for her work. But what she really cared about was telling the stories of people. "Everybody, everybody has a story," she told me several years ago when I profiled her for Ranch & Coast. We republish that profile in this issue, as well as her final story for this magazine. Hers was a life extraordinarily well lived. We, and the San Diego community, will miss her so much. ANDREA NAVERSEN: PHOTO BY JODY PINCHIN DARLENE G. DAVIES: PHOTO COURTESY OF PAUL MARSHALL Letter from the Editor W hen you live in a place like San Diego County, with its beautiful weather and miles of beaches, it's so easy to take it for granted. I love the shore, for example, but I don't take the time to visit there nearly enough for the walks that bring me so much joy. Simple pleasures can make such a difference in our lives, which are so crowded with commitments that we don't do what's truly important: take a break, breathe in, and explore the world around us, beginning in our own backyard. I realized that anew while reading over all the content for our August issue, focused on La Jolla. I have lived in North County for nearly 35 years and thought I knew this jewel by the sea until I read "La Jolla: A Gem of a City" by Editor-in-Chief Mia Park and Managing Editor Deanna Murphy. ey report on all that's going on along palm tree-lined Prospect Street, where the new Cormorant Boutique Hotel has sprung up right next to La Valencia, the venerable Pink Lady. I want to try new restaurants and revisit old favorites, take in a concert at e Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center, and take the grandkids to see the blue penguins at Birch Aquarium. Travel Editor Elizabeth Hansen, a longtime La Jolla resident, also reports on more summer fun including the La Jolla Cove Swim, Concerts by the Sea, and more. ere is so much to do, see, and savor in this coastal enclave. In "At Home with Elizabeth and Ron Davidson," I visit the hilltop La Jolla home of one of the founders of Ark Antiques, the consignment shop on Girard Avenue that has raised millions of dollars for animal charities. e Davidsons' home, just like the shop, is filled with treasures and antiques from around the world. Another local treasure is Warwick's bookstore, which sponsors events for both local and nationally known writers. I interview authors who have found a vibrant community of writers, resources, and support. Andrea Naversen, Editor-at-Large Instagram: @ranchandcoast Darlene G.
