PHOTO BY JODY PINCHIN Letter from the Editor For a modern tablescape that is a departure from the traditional holiday china, Susan Spath of Kern & Co. blends fine crystal with the beautiful outdoors. The table features Baccarat glassware, vases, butterflies, blooms, and more. Additional pieces from Jay Strongwater and Michael Aram reflect the California luxury lifestyle. Photography by Vincent Knakal on the cover Andrea Naversen, Editor-at-Large Instagram: @ranchandcoast A fter a busy summer and fall, the holidays always seem to sneak up on me. My calendar is once again crowded with fundraisers and fêtes. And my "to do" list is growing longer: buying the perfect gifts for family and friends, decking the halls, and figuring out menus for holiday gatherings. In this issue, interior designers Susan Spath of Kern & Co. and Maria Barry of Le Dimora share seasonal design inspiration whether you're dining in or alfresco. Managing Editor Deanna Murphy gets expert advice from a certified sommelier (her brother-in-law) on what wine to uncork for your next party, or what to bring as a hostess gift. (Murphy admits it's great to have a "somm" in the fam.) Food & Beverage Editor Brandon Hernández reports on what's cooking at e Marine Room now that French Master Chef Bernard Guillas has hung up his toque there to spend more time with family. Executive Chef Mike Minor is now at the helm after 30 years in Las Vegas. Hernández reports that Minor has made some major changes, including "the-over-the-top bill of fare" at Lounge at e Marine Room — luxurious small plates, creative cocktails, top shelf liquor, and fine wine. Travel Editor Elizabeth Hansen dishes on holiday doings at the Hotel del Coronado, which this fall unveiled Shore House, 75 residences with one to three bedrooms. e Del will serve anksgiving dinner in the Southpoint Ballroom near the Shore House, and November also marks the beginning of festivities including Skating by the Sea and "At First Light," a nightly light show in front of the hotel. In December, the always popular Movies on the Beach return. Book your Christmas dinner in the historic Crown Room, take in a play at Lamb's Players eatre, or watch the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights at the Coronado Ferry Landing. Looking for a quick getaway? I headed to Sonoma County, checking in at the Montage Healdsburg, where I sampled the season's bounty, visited top wineries, and explored all that this rich farming community has to offer. Even closer, Murphy encourages you to plan ahead for springtime in Coachella Valley's Indian Wells, dubbed "Tennis Paradise" because it draws top players from around the world to its annual BNP Paribas Open (set for March 16-19, 2023). In honor of Veterans Day, Contributing Editor Bill Abrams traces the history of the Mt. Soledad Cross and the Mt. Soledad Memorial Association, which this year will honor the Navajo Code Breakers, Marines who transmitted secret messages, often on the front lines, during World War II. In "At Home With Catherine Garcia and Family," I tour the North County coastal home of the award-winning NBC 7 news anchor, wife, mother, and community volunteer. As anksgiving approaches, Garcia reflects on all that she is grateful for this holiday season. Whether your celebrations take you to a far-flung destination or to your own bedecked living room, we wish you memories filled with joy and gratitude. @ranchandcoast ranchandcoast.com 28 NOVEMBER 2022 RANCH & COAST MAGAZINE
