In 2011, Studio Europa became San Diego's exclusive dealer of cabinetry made by Leicht, a 90-year-old German company known for its quality and precision manufacturing. "That is essential," explains Zaugg. "We don't use any molding or caulk to cover imperfections and mistakes. Everything is installed with precision." Adds Clemens, "People start opening the drawers and their eyes light up. They feel the quality." Among the latest trends in European kitchens are glass countertops, available in hundreds of colors, as well as handleless cabinets featuring louvers and other decorative patterns far from the flat Shaker-inspired cabinetry used in many American homes. "The contemporary style is very popular in new construction downtown and along the coast," says Zaugg. "But we are seeing more clientele in both new and traditional homes throughout San Diego.
