"ey help deployed service members record bedtime stories for their kiddos to watch when they are away. I think this is such a sweet concept," says Garcia, whose father was a career Air Force officer. Growing up, she moved six times and attended eight schools, so she understands the challenges military families face. She also loved reading bedtime stories to her son when he was a little boy, so she calls her involvement with United rough Reading "a great fit." For recreation, the family frequents local beaches and Balboa Park, and enjoys such San Diego traditions as the Del Mar Fair and thoroughbred racing at the Del Mar Racetrack. ey also like to sample new restaurants and savor old standbys. "Tony's Jacal is a family favorite," says Garcia. "I love that it has such a history and is still family- run after all of these years." Other faves include Grand Ole BBQ Flinn Springs, Jeune et Jolie, Ember & Rye, Valle, Wormwood, Vaga, and Convoy-area restaurants. Garcia is an accomplished tennis player and enjoys league matches around North County. For fun, Tad has a side business, Happy Hops Van, a restored 1966 Volkswagen van outfitted with a custom-built eight-tap beer wall, serving brews at events around North County. As a television anchor and reporter, Garcia has to report bad news: the continuing pandemic, political and economic turmoil, the war in Ukraine, and natural disasters here and abroad. But as anksgiving approaches and throughout the year, she also remembers to pause and reflect on the good. "I'm so thankful for so many things. I actually keep a gratitude journal and every night before I go to sleep, I write down five things I'm grateful for. Some things very consistently show up on my list: my family, for sure, my friends from all different stages in life, our good health, my job and all of the viewers who welcome me into their homes, and our home — not just the structure itself, but our community." "As we head into the holidays, I wish that everyone had a circle of loved ones who can support them and make them feel accepted and valued," she continues. "at human connection is what it's all about at the end of the day, isn't it? e pandemic helped so many of us reassess what we value and how we spend our time. Hopefully, this means we can all take some meaningful time over the holidays to be present with those we love and cherish most and tell them how much they mean to us."
