SOLEDAD NATIONAL VETERANS MEMORIAL The Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial Day Ceremony will take place this Memorial Day at 11am. The MSNVM is collaborating with Project Recover to honor the sacrifices of all those servicemembers who selflessly gave of themselves so that others could live free. The ceremony will recognize the service of US Navy Aviation Radioman 3rd Class, Walter "Uncle Bert" Mintus, who, while on a bombing mission in the island of Palau in the Western Pacific, crashed with three airmen onboard his aircraft. All three aviators were declared missing in action. Seventy-two years later, Project Recover located his Avenger. In June of 2018, Mintus' remains were accounted for and returned to his family. A Veteran Honor Plaque will be unveiled and presented to his relatives during the ceremony. The keynote speaker is Vice Admiral Kenneth Whitesell, Commander, Naval Air Forces/Commander, Naval Air Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet. Special guest speaker is Pat Scannon, MD, PhD, Project Recover Founder. The ceremony is free to attend, with parking and shuttle services from the nearby French American School and the Mt. Soledad Presbyterian Church. 619.838.2964, neiloconnell@soledadmemorial.com PUPAPALOOZA: PHOTO BY ERIN WIESE PHOTO MT.
