PHOTO BY VINCENT KNAKAL Letter from the Editor Married fine artists Lisa Albert and Mark Holmes at their art-filled La Jolla home Photography by Vincent Knakal on the cover Andrea Naversen, Editor-at-Large Instagram: @ranchandcoast L a Jolla has long been known for its spectacular scenery, from its storied coastline to its craggy caves and the ocean stretching far beyond the horizon. Little wonder then, that this jewel has inspired artists for centuries. In this issue, our traditional focus on La Jolla, we feature four of those artists including the award-winning Vira Ustianska, who fled Ukraine with her daughter after the war broke out. She has found a home — and hope — for a better life — thanks to Connie Terwilliger, a former announcer at KFMB-TV and now a successful voice-over talent. Ustianska has shown her work widely and has won several awards, including a first place at this summer's San Diego County Fair. I also feature Kathryn Redding Stephens, known for her long work with Walden Family Services, who is now focusing on her art career. A former top model in the 1980s, she honed her eye working with such famed photographers as Richard Avedon. e La Jolla Historical Society chose one of her works to publicize its Secret Garden Tour in 2023. Bill Abrams profiles Mark Holmes and his wife, Lisa Albert, whose firm Albert & Holmes has provided fine art and custom interiors for Mitt Romney and other A-list clients. eir passion for art is now more personal: plein air for him, abstracts for her. La Jollans are also known for their philanthropy. In "At Home With Janice and Steve Farnow, I tour the hilltop home of this accomplished couple. Janice is president of St. Germaine Children's Charity, now celebrating its 40th anniversary helping abused and neglected children. Managing Editor Deanna Murphy talks with Michelle Lerach, who took the seed of an idea and planted it here in San Diego. Now flourishing is the Berry Good Food Foundation, a nonprofit promoting local, sustainably produced food through gardening, cooking classes in schools, policy, and more. Also on the food front, Food & Beverage Editor Brandon Hernández reviews Le Coq, the buzzy "new wave French steakhouse" now open on the former site of Herringbone with top toque Tara Monsod at the helm. ranchandcoast.com 32 AUGUST 2024 RANCH & COAST MAGAZINE
