Letter from the Editor O n April 17, the San Dieguito Alumni Association inducted Jimmy Mitchell (Class of 1959), Neal Glasgow (1967), and Amy Tomlinson (1996) into the high school's Hall of Fame. ey joined a distinguished roster of the school's alumni that includes professional surfers Linda Benson (1962) and Rob Machado (1991), tennis superstar Michael Chang (1990), Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Chris Hillman of e Byrds (1962) and Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam (1982), Grammy Award-winners Jon Foreman (1995) and Tim Foreman (1997) of Switchfoot, and KFMB Channel 8 newscaster Jeff Zevely (1988), to name but a few. Laura Bennett, a dear friend and fellow 1996 graduate who was honored in 2024 as San Dieguito Union High School District Teacher of the Year, delivered a speech highlighting Tomlinson's many accomplishments including her service as a United States Naval Flight Officer and becoming one of the first females to join the esteemed Blue Angels team, her work as a city councilmember in Pacific Grove, California, and her current role with Amazon's drone delivery department. I found myself tearing up several times during the ceremony, feeling so grateful that we were raised in an environment that led us to reach for our dreams. In return, supporting our San Diego community continues to guide our editorial mission here at Ranch & Coast. Our Attend pages are filled with upcoming galas and fundraisers assisting those who are making a difference in the lives of our neighbors in need. During the month of May, National Foster Care Month, Promises2Kids' Foodies 4 Foster Kids campaign has partnered with 42 restaurants throughout our county that have committed to donating proceeds from select menu items to fund programs that serve San Diego's foster youth. May is also National Mental Health Awareness Month. Managing Editor Deanna Murphy connects with Dr. Richard Levak for insights on how to engage in the challenging but deeply important conversations we face with loved ones who may be struggling.
