M any years ago, I shared that I studied piano with the world-renowned late Jane Bastien of La Jolla, loving the ride along the coast from Cardiff with my mother. Decades later, that scenic route is still magical. Now, my own daughter studies with Mrs. Bastien's daughter, Lori Bastien Vickers, and I cherish the drives together, just as I know my mother did with me. Beyond my own personal sentimentality, La Jolla is revered for its art, beauty, and leading-edge scientific institutions. On August 2, Team Ranch & Coast will ride along the Torrey Pines coastline in the Curebound Cancer Challenge, and I'm proud that since 2019 we've raised more than $50,000 toward the goal to end cancer. at same evening, Las Patronas presents its 79th Annual Jewel Ball, welcoming supporters to a transformed wonderland at La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club to fund capital items for six nonprofit beneficiaries. On August 16, Symphony at Salk brings the San Diego Symphony to the stage, featuring an exclusive concert event with Emmy and Tony Award- winner Kristin Chenoweth to support Salk Institute's Year of Alzheimer's Disease Research. And on September 15, guests will gather at the hilltop La Jolla estate of Joan Waitt, who has generously hosted Promises2Kids' Dream On Concert Gala for more than a decade to create a brighter future for San Diego's foster youth. For our cover story, Food & Beverage Editor Brandon Hernández brings us inside the newly reopened A.R. Valentien. With an enhanced kitchen, refreshed menus, and a renewed spirit of creativity, the signature restaurant of e Lodge at Torrey Pines has entered a new chapter of delivering the refined hospitality that defines this La Jolla landmark. Food Editor-at-Large Terryl Gavre connects with iconic restaurateur Sami Ladeki about the anticipated return of La Jolla's Roppongi on Prospect Street. Contributing Editor Gillian Flynn introduces us to La Jolla native Bradley McDonald, owner of Girard Avenue Marketplace, who has carefully curated a mix of seasoned antique dealers alongside new-era designers. Flynn also showcases the creative mind of La Jolla artist James Kendall Higgins, whose artwork has been commissioned for both private and public collections. Fall gala season is in full swing. Please peruse our Attend pages to note the upcoming gatherings to help serve those in need. On September 11, e Country Friends is on pace to present a record-breaking Art of Fashion in partnership with South Coast Plaza on the lawns of e Inn at Rancho Santa Fe. We also hope you'll mark October 5 on your calendar, when the 11th Annual Taste of Rancho Santa Fe returns to e Inn, offering sips and tastes from 70+ leading food and beverage partners to support the charitable efforts of the Rancho Santa Fe Rotary Club.
