an essential resource that steps in to fill financial gaps if they encounter shortfalls or identify additional needs. For the roughly 400 students served there today, this means far more than simply peace of mind. "I was just at an investment meeting with somebody who has a 41-year-old daughter who's been there a year, and she said with tears in her eyes, 'I don't know what we'd do without it,'" says Kleinbub, who sits on the endowment's board of directors. It's a family affair — Kleinbub's son (and Sister Kraemer's nephew) Eric is the foundation's secretary. Eric, owner of La Jolla's Michelin- recommended Paradisaea and the Bird Rock boutique Tropical Punch, grew up visiting the center, doing art projects with the kids and even sharing his family's pet rabbits to create a sort of petting zoo. Now, together with the foundation's board, Angel and Eric's job is to ensure that the school Sister Kraemer created will live on to continue its mission to educate and empower its students to realize their full potential. "Whenever there is an issue or something needs money, immediately, that's where the Kraemer endowment steps in," says Eric. "It's there only for the preservation of the school and its function." With an approximate value of $16 million, the foundation is healthy and able to assist wherever it must. "ey come to us first for help whenever they need it," says Eric. But even at what sounds like a staggering value, Eric is realistic about what the future might bring. "We don't know what's next, or what we might be called upon to do, but there's so many things that are happening all the time that I think it'll always be essential, no matter what, moving forward — and it always could use more." stmsc.org The Donald C. and Elizabeth M.
