T he holidays are a time for merriment, gathering with loved ones, and reflecting upon the blessings in our lives. ey're also a time for giving — not just the pretty boxes we'll wrap and the stockings we'll fill — but the gifts of our time, talent, and financial support, to truly make a difference in the lives of those in need. In 2020, when the pace slowed, we at Ranch & Coast Magazine took a step back and refocused our editorial direction. It became abundantly clear that we needed to expand our charitable coverage to ensure that those on the front lines were able to continue serving those they support, especially as needs continued to escalate. So, we launched a feature to dive deep into the mission of hand- selected charities covering a range of needs. Written by Managing Editor Deanna Murphy, this feature is a favorite endeavor we embark upon each December issue since. It's incredibly inspiring to see the many ways in which our San Diego community steps up to fill a need. (Read about this year's six chosen charities on page 42.) It was also in 2020 that our Charitable Giving Guide was created to connect area nonprofits with our generous and philanthropic readers. Now in its sixth year, the 2025 guide showcases more than 60 charitable organizations who would be thrilled to be considered as you look to make your year-end contributions. Also in this issue, Editor-at-Large Andrea Naversen reports that thanks to a $1 million grant from e Peggy and Robert Matthews Foundation, as well as support from the Conrad Prebys Foundation, the Center for Women's History has been established through a merger between the Women's Museum of California and the San Diego History Center (SDHC), with a permanent gallery in the SDHC located in the Casa de Balboa building along El Prado for research, exhibitions, education, and preservation. LETTER: PHOTO BY TIM HARDY Our Seen pages are again filled with recaps of galas and gatherings with a purpose, including a recent partnership between Flower Hill Promenade and Ranch & Coast in the form of an evening fashion show fundraiser to benefit Rady Children's Health, which I was honored to co-emcee, pictured here with my colleagues Charlotte Pence (left) and Andrea Naversen (center). Amid the glitz and glamour, at the core of our party pages is a shared commitment to making a difference. e heart of the holiday season is found in giving. Whether you're inspired by the arts or moved by the needs of a child, we hope this issue encourages you to weave generosity into your celebrations — this year and always.
