Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial Since 1954, the Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial has honored Veterans from every military branch and preserved their legacies. Nearly 7,000 black granite plaques, mounted across 16 walls beneath a 29-foot-tall cross, commemorate more than 10,000 stories of those who have proudly served and sacrificed to protect our freedoms. More than 70 years later, the Memorial remains committed to that mission and continues to stand as a 100% privately funded landmark. Operating entirely on private support, this iconic landmark does more than preserve history; it activates it. When the Murphy Canyon air disaster struck in May 2025, the Memorial partnered with the San Diego Nice Guys to raise $50,000 for devastated military families. This agility reflects a community that understands service and sacrifice. Standing 822 feet above the Pacific, children trace San Diego's military heritage from Marine Corps Air Station Miramar to the USS Midway. • When crisis strikes, the community responds. After the Murphy Canyon disaster, donors raised $50,000 in weeks. When vandalism threatened the Memorial, supporters contributed $2,650 within days.
