Bringing Beer to the 'Burbs Harland Brewing's new for-us-by-us eatery offers innovative food in a family-friendly setting enhance their existing food program in South Park while adapting it for expansion. Last summer, the company debuted e Ocotillo at Harland, an on-site kitchen at the company's Scripps Ranch headquarters offering apps and handhelds, and last month marked the arrival of the beer company's first-ever full-service restaurant in the inland North County community of 4S Ranch. Installed in the 3,400-square-foot Del Sur Town Center space that previously housed Ponce's and beer-centric eatery Waypoint Public, the new spot is designed to be family-friendly and appeal to nearby residents. It's a faction Harland's co-founders, Jeff Hansson and Anthony Levas, are quite familiar with, as the former currently resides in the area and the latter grew up there, graduating from Rancho Bernardo High. Ditto Cannon, who spent the past decade working at brewery-equipped RB resto e Cork & Craft and Delicias in Rancho Santa Fe before that, and is eager to reconnect with his many regulars at his new digs. Cannon's approach for the 4S Ranch restaurant is to balance comfort with creativity, infusing dishes rooted in Americana with influences and ingredients derived from Asia, France, Italy, and Mexico. It's innovation sans pretentiousness with a focus on full-fledged flavor. A lengthy list of shareable appetizers includes garlic-soy noodles with Parmesan, kung pao calamari, bleu cheese flatbread with prosciutto and a balsamic reduction, and chicken "tendies" (a fan fave from Harland's other locations) with house-made ranch, barbecue, or honey mustard. at crispy-breaded yardbird is also available in sandwich form drizzled with gochujang hot honey, sharing menu space with a signature smash burger, shrimp-and-lobster roll, and fish tacos. A half-dozen entrees are highlighted by braised short rib with goat- cheese mashed potatoes, three-cheese gnocchi, seared salmon with a POG (passionfruit, orange, guava) beurre blanc, and a half-roasted chicken with smoked tomato jus. And hiding out on the dessert menu is perhaps the best dish of them all: an artfully deconstructed carrot cake that's moist, rich, and worth saving room for. All of the above can be enjoyed in a spacious dining room presided over by a sophisticated, brass-plated bar, or the outdoor back patio. It's a far cry from sipping on IPAs in a cavernous industrial suite atop bags of pilsner malt. Harland's freshest, most ambitious location honors 4S Ranch while providing those who also call it home with something both new and next level. harlandbeer.com T here was a time when a brewery expanding its local presence care of a satellite location meant securing a smallish space in which to install a makeshift bar with grain sack-topped kegs as seating. at was enough in the early days of the craft beer renaissance, but decades following San Diego's suds surge, fans demand more. So, too, do brewing companies which strive not only to make top-tier beer, but match that level of quality in the venues, atmosphere, and amenities they present to their clientele. Count Harland Brewing Company among that contingent. Since opening its first location in Scripps Ranch in 2018, Harland has succeeded in providing patrons with stylish taprooms where they can make their way through a long and ever-changing roster of crushable lagers, hop-forward ales, luxurious stouts, and everything in between. In 2022, the company joined the restaurant ranks by taking over the former site of Grants Market & Coffee in South Park and developing a simultaneously slick, homey menu that instantly won over their new 'hood. at triumph inspired them to dream bigger.
