George G. Glenner Alzheimer's
Family Centers, Inc.
Forty years ago, Dr. George and Joy Glenner took a frantic call from a distressed
caregiver and stopped a murder-suicide. That fateful incident drove Dr. Glenner
to "start taking care of the living" as his compassion for those caring for loved
ones with Alzheimer's was as tangible as his scientific genius. That same year, the
Glenners opened the first-in-the nation dementia-specific, nonprofit adult day
health care program. Today, the Glenners' legacy includes 3 centers throughout
San Diego County where hundreds of thousands have received care in safe and
nurturing environments, and their families have benefited from worry-free respite,
case management, and TLC. Continuing the Glenners' directive to remain
accessible to all, for the last 8 years, due to the generosity of donors, this nonprofit
has maintained an hourly rate of $11.88 and offered specialized services for free.
