I had not traveled to Cabo San Lucas in years, so I especially looked forward to revisiting this bustling coastal town just a two-hour flight from San Diego. But I soon learned that the Forbes Five-Star Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal offers far more than margaritas and mole. A resort driver met my longtime friend Suzy Westphal and me at the airport, and 40 minutes later we wound through a maze of narrow, twisting streets to the resort's guard-gated private entrance close to both the town and marina. But when we drove through Dos Mares (Spanish for "two seas"), a privately owned tunnel carved through granite, I had a feeling that we weren't in Cabo anymore. At the end of the tunnel, a gracious resort staff welcomed us to this elegant hideaway perched on a cliff overlooking the Pacific and a pristine stretch of sand. We checked in at the open-air lobby dubbed Peacock Alley, named after the famed Waldorf Astoria promenade dating to 1897 in New York City, where well-dressed guests paraded in their finery. Here at the Waldorf Astoria Pedregal, however, the dress code is much more relaxed: flip-flops, shorts, swimsuits, and sundresses rather than tuxedos and evening gowns. Over the next few days, we got to know General Manager Juan Gonzalez Izquierdo, who began his career as a busboy in London, later working at hotels including New York's Carlyle Hotel and the Waldorf Astoria Atlanta Buckhead before assuming his post at Pedregal.
