its catalogs, the Atlanta-based Ballard was founded in 1983 by Helen Ballard, who launched a career and company after she won a home decorating contest sponsored by the former Metropolitan Home magazine. Since then, the brand has expanded into an omnichannel retailer with 25 stores, two websites, and even a How to Decorate podcast. Last year, Ballard opened its only West Coast showroom in the Cedros Avenue Design District (previously occupied by Leaping Lotus and Via de la Luna). President Karen Mooney called the seaside town "the picture-perfect spot" for the brand's first California location. e expansive 7,400-square-foot space showcases furniture and décor for every area in the home — living, dining, sleeping, and in-and- outdoor entertaining. Customers can purchase décor, accessories, gifts, and fabric by-the-yard in store. Five full-time designers are on hand to provide complimentary services — helping customers with their design dilemmas and placing orders for custom furniture, lighting, artwork, and accessories from its vast collection. "Appointments can be conducted in-store or in the client's home," explains Ballard Designs' Visual Sales Lead Lizz Ferguson. "Whether they are looking for fabric suggestions, styling a bookcase, or a fully rendered 3D model of their space, our designers can do it all!" Store manager Nicole Schubert says Ballard offers transitional — leaning toward traditional — furnishings with a good mix of coastal designs. "Ballard does a great job of respecting tradition while finding a new spin on it to keep designs new and fresh." She says Mooney also finds inspiration from travels in the South of France and other destinations. Color palettes are anything but boring: cheetah prints, cornflower blue, and verdant green.
