COUNTER CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT The magnificent and sobering American Cemetery overlooks the hallowed grounds of Omaha Beach, site of one of the bloodiest and most crucial battles of World War II. It is the final resting place for more than 9,000 Americans killed in the D-Day landings and ensuing battles; Château d'Urspelt in Clervaux, Luxembourg, offers luxury accommodations; Utah Beach is one of two American landing beaches in France on D-Day that allowed for the invasion forces to advance off the beach and through the flooded fields; Piti Point, located on the western coast of Guam, and nearby Asan Beach are significant sites that witnessed intense combat during World War II; Fort Mills Hospital in the Philippines was occupied by American nurses until Japan invaded in December 1941; The Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial is the only memorial that honors veterans, living or deceased, with an image of the veteran.
