SAFFRON & ROSE: PHOTO BY BOB STEFANKO What's New Camino Books: For the Road Ahead has opened a new location at Del Mar Plaza next to An's Hatmakers. Formerly known as Diesel, A Bookstore, Camino Books has a rich history rooted in bookselling excellence. Originally launched in the Bay Area in 1989, the bookstore expanded to Malibu, Brentwood, Larkspur, and Del Mar. With its move from Del Mar Highlands to Del Mar Plaza, Camino Books opens a fresh chapter, continuing its tradition of passionate bookselling and thoughtful selection across genres. Coral Del Mar has opened in Del Mar Village in the former Zel's spot, offering a vibrant coastal dining experience with a fusion of Baja, Hawaiian, and Southeast Asian flavors. Menu highlights include Seared Ahi Crispy Rice, Macadamia Crusted Local Halibut, Lemongrass Chicken Dumplings, Spam Musubi, and a Del Mar Wagyu Burger. The restaurant also offers creative cocktails, a pet-friendly patio, and live music in the bar on Wednesdays. Just opened on 15th Street next to Del Mar Pizza is Saffron & Rose, a Persian ice cream shop founded in 1974 by Ali Kashani-Rafye, whose recipes for rich and fragrant ice creams have spellbound Californians since their debut. The shops remain family-owned and operated decades later, with standout flavors including Saffron Pistachio, Green Pistachio, White Rose, Pink Rose, Taro and Ube, Ginger, and more. What's Now Returning to its tradition of Friday Opening Days, Del Mar Thoroughbred Club kicks off its 86th summer racing season on July 18 with San Diego's biggest party. The season runs through September 7 with racing taking place Thursdays through Sundays. Fans can look forward to the return of beloved trackside events like Del Mar Beer Fest (July 19), Uncorked: Del Mar Wine Fest (August 2), and Tacos & Tequila (August 9), along with weekly favorites including Diamond Club Free & Easy Thursdays, Turf Club Fridays, and Savory Sundays. The $1,000,000 Pacific Classic returns on August 30, and remains a key "Win and You're In" qualifier for the 2025 Breeders' Cup World Championships, happening at Del Mar on October 31 and November 1. After the races on Opening Day, the celebration continues at L'Auberge Del Mar's "La Dolce Vita by the Sea" after-party from 5pm to midnight (see page 51). Across the street at Del Mar Plaza, Monarch Ocean Pub's 5th Annual Opening Day Bash from 5 to 10pm features live performances by Boombox Heroes, Ben Benavente, and The Island Boys, along with local food and drink vendors.
