PHOTO BY VINCENT KNAKAL Bobby Riggs Racket & Paddle Editors' Pick: A Healthy Dose of Fun Officially declared the fastest-growing sport in America and with devotees from former tour-level tennis professionals to Bill Gates to (most likely) your next-door neighbor, pickleball's popularity certainly hasn't skipped over San Diego. Case in point: Bobby Riggs Racket & Paddle in Encinitas. Named for the colorful former World No. 1 and Hall of Fame professional tennis player who founded the club and lived out his years in Leucadia, the former tennis club has been converted to feature 20 dedicated pickleball courts (one non-regulation tennis court remains for practice and instruction only) — a veritable mecca for local recreational and competitive players as well as host to a multitude of competitive tournaments. Co-owner Jennifer Dawson is No. 2 in the Pro Pickleball Association's Senior Women's Singles Rankings, just behind her doubles partner Cammy MacGregor, with whom Dawson took gold in the US Open Pickleball Championships earlier this year — proof positive this is no casual retirement pastime. bobbyriggs.net D.M.
