We've got a family dinner reservation at e Steakhouse, a softly lit, old-school, upscale meatery. I warn the 20-somethings not to fill up on bread, but it's hard to resist warm pretzel rolls slathered with date butter. Conversation zeroes in on the gift exchanges. Somehow, my daughter found a gag gift set of plates for the white elephant exchange…at posh West Elm? And of all the Palm Canyon Drive boutiques to choose from, my wife's son and my daughter's boyfriend both bought the same gift: Games Room Food & Drink Trivia from Out West Trading Company. We give e Steakhouse a handful of thumbs-ups for a couple of 16-ounce ribeye steaks, freshly caught halibut, cedar plank-cooked salmon, and Colorado lamb chops. As a group, we're obsessed with the gelatinous-but-oddly-sweet side of mint jelly that accompanies the lamb chops. which brings on minimal stress — but it's also a fun starting point for getting to know the destination. On Palm Canyon Drive, there are plenty of mom-and-pop shops. Sure, there's a West Elm. But that chain is offset by small business storefronts like Sazzy, Wabi Sabi, Find Your Feet, Running Wild, and block after block of vintage music stores. Game on. ere are three Agua Calientes in Greater Palm Springs: one downtown, a brand-new casino in Cathedral City, and the marquee casino-resort in Rancho Mirage. Shopping treasures in tow, we make the 20-minute drive from downtown to Rancho Mirage. e 16-floor, AAA Four Diamond resort is an impressive and solitary outpost at the end of Ramon Road, just before Innesrstate 10. Agua Caliente has 77,000 square feet of gambling space. (My vice: ere's a small but active poker room in a back corner that stays busy into the wee hours with live games and daily tournament offerings.)
