What's New The January opening of Heritage Barbecue & Beer Co. had people braving the uncharacteristically rainy weather for a taste of what fans of the well-established outpost in San Juan Capistrano already love: chef-driven, small batch, SoCal-influenced barbecue fare that earned it Michelin Bib Gourmand status. Found in a prime location on the corner of Coast Highway and Vista Way, Oceanside's Heritage is nearly 10,000 square feet of airy-but-inviting restaurant with ample seating to enjoy a meat-centric menu (obviously), much of it locally sourced and featuring house-made touches like salsas and sauces. Our recs: Start with the Chili Fries, a great opening act before mains including the tender Barbacoa on house-made tortillas or a juicy "Famous" Smoked Burger on a fresh bun from nearby Hokkaido Bread Company. Award-winning local brewer Mike Aubuchon, formerly of Pizza Port Carlsbad, takes charge of the restaurant's 20 taps, where all beers are brewed on-site. Next up for the Heritage team: A honky-tonk style cocktail lounge in the adjacent space that was a bank vault in a long-past life and, more recently, housed the Whiskey Bank speakeasy. heritagecraftbbq.com DEANNA MURPHY Heritage Barbecue & Beer Co.
