I f there was one lasting lesson from 2020, it was the realization that our homes matter more than we once imagined. When daily life shifted indoors, our homes became offices, classrooms, gyms, gathering spaces, and sanctuaries all at once. In response, many developed a deeper appreciation for our surroundings and a renewed desire to create spaces that feel both beautiful and functional. Home improvement projects surged as kitchens, outdoor living areas, home offices, and wellness- focused spaces became central to everyday life. At the same time, we discovered that productivity isn't necessarily tied to a physical office. Freed from geographic constraints, professionals began reevaluating where they wanted to live rather than where they needed to live. Few places benefited more from that shift than San Diego, where the promise of sunshine, outdoor recreation, and coastal living attracted a wave of new residents and helped redefine the region's real estate market in the years that followed. In this issue, Contributing Editor Gillian Flynn takes a closer look at San Diego's evolving luxury real estate landscape through conversations with five leading agents. From record-setting off-market transactions and an influx of affluent out-of-state buyers to growing demand for privacy, wellness amenities, and seamless indoor-outdoor entertaining, Flynn highlights the trends shaping today's high-end housing market. For our cover feature, Flynn explores designer and developer Jennifer DeLonge's singular Rancho Del Mar estate, where punk spirit, poetic gardens, and fearless design converge. Inspired in part by Dries Van Noten's Belgian grounds, DeLonge transformed a 1970s Jim Alcorn-designed property into a deeply personal creative space, preserving only its soaring A-frame ceiling while reimagining the home and landscape with master builder Greg Agee. PHOTO BY BOB STEFANKO e result is a romantic, unconventional showcase of DeLonge's eye for place, vintage curation, and bold indoor- outdoor living. is month also marks the beginning of racing season at the Del Mar oroughbred Club.
