e Sound of Silence U ntil recently, the United States was charging headlong into mandating that all of us make our next new car purchase a battery electric vehicle. But the majority of our fellow citizens didn't jump at the opportunity to enjoy the virtues of relatively quick, quiet, and "emissions-free" mobility. e reality of initial vehicle and annual insurance costs, driving range limitations, and recharging availability has kept most fellow motorists in gas or gas/electric hybrids. Automakers had an even tougher decision to make. Some were faced with major European cities mandating electric vehicle operation in the European Union's push to electrification along with China's sudden pivot to EV automotive production. And Tesla's ability to start an automotive company from scratch and then quickly become an international competitor was unprecedented. But in 2024, the brakes were put on the U.S. acceleration to electrification, and every automaker selling cars in our market was suddenly upending product planning to face a new reality. Which brings us to the svelte sedan just introduced by Ferrari, an automaker that has growled and howled its way into the hearts and treasure of well-heeled enthusiasts. ose fellows in Maranello possess a master's art of producing sonic grandeur from their machines, triggering an alpha-male raptor response that is seldom equaled. Even my former Ferrari Dino with its petite 2.4-liter V6 would reward throttle inputs with an intake howl just inches from my left ear. Of course, that driver's window was seldom raised. Ferrari's all-new battery-powered Luce is a luxury sedan that the company believes will attract a new group of buyers. detour transportation PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF FERRARI Exploring Ferrari's new all-electric Luce BY BRIAN DOUGLAS ranchandcoast.com 98 JULY 2026 RANCH & COAST MAGAZINE
