At first glance, I thought this smoothly-sculptured four-door would make a fine AppleCar if the Cupertino computer and iPhone maker had followed through on its plans to create a dazzling electric vehicle. Perhaps that presumption was driven by the car's designer Jony Ive, the fellow responsible for the sleek Apple computer and iPhone products. But it's nearly impossible to detect a trace of Ferrari DNA in this offering since only the small badges identify the Prancing Horse logo. Not unexpectedly, the new Luce has produced a host of criticism from Ferrari fans, journalists, and pundits. "What's the beef ?" I'm sure is what current Ferrari management must be pondering. After all, the Luce sports 1,036 horsepower, zips to 60 MPH in 2.4 seconds, has a top speed of 193 MPH, has a drag coefficient of 0.254, a range of 330 miles, holds five adults, and costs "just" $640,000. I wasn't asked for my opinion about Luce credentials in the luxury EV space, but if questioned, I would have pointed out the Lucid Air Sapphire. Here's a rival that has 1,234 HP, gets to 60 in just 1.98 seconds, can reach 205 MPH with a drag coefficient of 0.197, offers a range of 446 miles, and holds five adults plus a host of luggage. And the MSRP for this largesse is $250,500. Back in 2008, when Ferrari introduced its California model, I had lunch with Luca di Montezemolo, Ferrari's smart, aristocratic leader responsible for turning the automaker around. We discussed what should power a low or zero emission Ferrari. Montezemolo was sure of just one major attribute — it had to be a real Ferrari. e question of whether this battery-powered Prancing Horse delivers on that principle for Ferrari enthusiasts is yet to be answered.
