Museum of History and Culture La Jolla After 62 years, the La Jolla Historical Society officially rebranded as the Museum of History and Culture La Jolla, a name change reflecting its evolving public programming. Serving as a fitting thread for this transition, Stories in Cloth: Communicating rough Textiles at Wisteria Cottage (organized alongside the Visions Museum of Textile Art) examines fabric as a medium of narrative and identity. e exhibition pairs global traditions like West African Kente and mud cloth with contemporary works by San Diego-area artists, including Christine Lee's intricate weavings and Claudia Rodríguez-Biezunski's recast denim creations. Alongside the show, a new digital History Portal weaves together public access to the museum's extensive architectural and photographic archives. Published by the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, the 224-page hardbound publication chronicles the village's 15-year open-air exhibition of heavyweight artists. Photographed by a star in his own right, Philipp Scholz Rittermann, all 50 site-specific commissions are featured in full — highlighting work from cover artist Roy McMakin alongside legends like John Baldessari and Eleanor Antin. Because these outdoor installations are periodically rotated, repainted, or retired, this edition serves as the sole permanent record where the complete collection exists together in its entirety. It stands as an indispensable snapshot of world-class contemporary art hiding in plain sight.
