Louise Balma, Molly Bowman Styles, and Larry Balma Shawn Styles, Jim Kempton, and Jim Vallace Sam Armstrong, Kevan Shokat, and Jon Otterson John Maher with Jen and Rusty Preisendorfer Jericho Poppler, Mickey Munoz, and Mike Downey Chris Ahrens, Sam Armstrong, Diane Simeone, and Buzzy Kerbox Dino Dougenis, Scooter Leonard, Patty Maysent, Tyler Callaway, and Cory Reynolds Gerry Lopez Jen and Scott Kaats, Jericho Poppler, Gerry Lopez, and Jim Kempton Legends of Science and Surfing Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego hosted the 2026 Legends of Science and Surfing, bringing together internationally recognized oncology experts, legendary surfers, cancer survivors, and community leaders in support of groundbreaking cancer research. e event began with the Legends of Science Industry and Academia Oncology Symposium at Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa, featuring keynote speaker and 2026 Rell Sunn Award recipient Kevan M. Shokat, PhD. e following day, the 33rd Annual Legends of Surfing Invitational took to the waves at Scripps Pier, pairing supporters with surfing legends for a spirited beachside fundraiser. Since its inception, Legends has raised more than $13 million to advance cancer prevention, detection, and treatment. PHOTOGRAPHY BY JENNIFER NELSON Seen Koa Legends Circle: An Evening with Gerry Lopez California Surf Museum celebrated the Koa Legends Circle with an intimate evening featuring legendary surfer Gerry Lopez. Hosted by Scott and Jen Kaats, the gathering brought together founding members John and Chris Dahl, Larry and Louise Balma, Dave Tourje, Jericho Poppler, and Brett Jorgensen. e Koa Legends Circle is the museum's exclusive founding membership and donor program honoring surfing's rich history and cultural heritage. e special evening offered an opportunity to celebrate that legacy with Lopez while recognizing those whose support helps preserve and share the history and culture of surfing for generations to come.
