Editor's Pick, Trunk Show: Elephant Valley Knowing your audience is everything in design. For the new Denny Sanford Elephant Valley at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, the primary clients happened to weigh six tons. Standard spatial rules didn't quite apply. Executed by local architect Hanna Gabriel Wells, the 13-acre layout — the largest and most ambitious in San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance history — drops human visitors directly into the herd's world. Anchoring the site is the Mkutano House, a safari-inspired lodge designed to handle massive scale while teeing up immersive views of watering holes and dirt banks. It was a literal heavy-lift, carving 4.5 million gallons of water features into a seamless San Diego savanna. sdzsafaripark.org. G.F.
