Of course, since we were in e Bard's neck of the woods, we wanted to see one of his works and opted for Much Ado About Nothing at the National eatre. It was a great production, and I was surprised to recognize the actor who played Beatrice, the female lead, from her role as the receptionist in Doc Martin, a British comedy/drama television series. e next day, we relished the guided tour at Shakespeare's Globe. e reconstruction of the theater where his plays were performed is located about 750 feet from the original theater. Plays are staged as they would have been by e Bard — open-air, under a thatched roof, and without artificial lighting. ere's also an area for audience members to stand in front of the stage as they did in the Elizabethan era. e project, on the south bank of the ames, was spearheaded by late American actor Sam Wanamaker and opened in 1997. At the end of our London stay, my daughter and I agreed that our time at Shakespeare's Globe was the highlight of the trip. Book well ahead for tickets to tour or to attend a performance. of the best place, but some of the most popular are e Harrods Tea Rooms, as well as these hotels: e Goring, e Dorchester, e Savoy, e Cadogan, and e Ritz. Regardless of where you go, expect to be offered scones with clotted cream and jam, delicate finger sandwiches, and a variety of fancy little cakes. In addition to tea, there are other beverage choices for the younger set. Tea at e Cadogan remains our granddaughter's favorite memory from the trip. e Play's e ing We all enjoy the theater, so prior to our trip we poured over the options. I couldn't resist e Mousetrap, the world's longest running play. e Agatha Christie murder mystery opened in London's West End in 1952 and ran continuously until March 2020, when stage performances were temporarily suspended because of you-know-what. It re-opened in May 2021.
