A European Retreat in Rancho Santa Fe Designer Susan Spath fulfills homeowners' wishes for a stylish French abode HEN A YOUNG COUPLE moved from London to Rancho Santa Fe, they were looking for a home that would meet the needs of their growing family. After touring the private residence of interior designer Susan Spath of Susan Spath Interior Design, the full-service design arm of her renowned home interiors boutique, Kern & Company, the family asked her to design the interiors for a new, custom build by John Jensen Architects and Herbst Construction. e family wanted "a French-style home that would be elegant and peaceful," says Spath. "A space where the family could create endless memories." Although the interior design was inspired by Spath's own home, she never designs projects exactly the same way. "ere are always different elements and features I incorporate to truly make each home one of a kind. is home was no exception," she says. e first step in the design process: Getting to know her clients. "For me to design their dream home, I need to understand their lifestyle," says Spath. In this case, the clients often had family visiting from out of town, so Spath designed plenty of space to accommodate visitors. She added custom bunk beds in the guest house, for example, as well a guest suite. e existing home on the property was demolished, but a large ficus tree remains, which is now the focal point of the new home's entrance. Spath found a massive antique stone surround framing the entryway at an old castle in France and shipped the pieces to Rancho Santa Fe. "It adds so much character to this home and brings French style architecture to life," she notes.
