Creating aesthetically appealing and functional spaces also requires collaboration amongst a spectrum of professionals engaged in a proj- ect, says Uyeda. "ere's so much interaction, obviously, with architects, interior designers, but we work with every single engineer as well — the plumbing engineer, the electrical engineer, the lighting engineer, the soils engineer, everybody," he explains. "We bring everyone togeth- er, and we make sure everything works, along with the architect." Art, too, has become a significant element within Burton's creations. Citing Montage Newport Beach as one of the earliest projects in which Burton incorporated art, principal Matthew MacLeod says, "From there, in every project, we try to infuse art into it. It's a great way to separate yourself and give identity to the project." Fellow principal Patrick Baldwin says art's significance is larger than just the in-the-moment experience. "[With] the arts, there's a memory point. And just even a little piece just becomes that, instantly," he says. F OR THOSE UNFAMILIAR WITH landscape architecture, the term likely gives the impression that the entire scope of responsibility lies with plants. But in today's world of indoor- outdoor living, plants are just part of the bigger puzzle. "What we run up against a lot is exactly that: People think landscape architects are just planting and that's it," acknowledges Matt Uyeda, one of three principals at Burton Studio, a landscape architecture firm based in Solana Beach's Cedros Design District. "But now, and especially in Southern California, we really delve into not only space on the exterior, but also the interior, because that's what everyone's expecting at this point — a cohesive experience blending inside and outside."
