8 0 Founded in 1946 by 14 visionary La Jolla women under the guidance of Kathryn Hosmer, Las Patronas celebrates eight decades of philanthropy and community impact. Its inaugural Jewel Ball in 1947 raised $1,357, launching one of San Diego's most cherished charitable traditions. e festivities were legendary: In 1957, Louis Armstrong delighted guests before jumping off the bandstand to lead a spirited snake dance around the beach club pool, playing "When the Saints Go Marching In." Yet beneath the glamour was a greater purpose. As columnist Neil Morgan observed in the Evening Tribune in 1952, "e Jewel Ball may be the best party of the year, as I've always thought it was, but it is much more than that." Today, the signature gala is the culmination of a year-long fundraising effort organized entirely by volunteers. Over its history, Las Patronas has awarded upwards of $28 million through more than 5,000 grants to San Diego County nonprofits. Supporting vital services in health, education, social services, and cultural arts, the organization continues its enduring mission of enhancing quality of life throughout the community.
