ranchandcoast.com 46 MAY 2023 RANCH & COAST MAGAZINE Reimagining Homes for Today's Families Ranch-based architect infuses new life into beloved luxury residences he is as versed in traditional as he is in transitional and modern, sharing detailed virtual renderings each step along the way. Howe is the contact person for all his projects, and with expertise in everything from architectural design to landscaping, swimming pools, water gardens, and even water management and site work, he guides clients through every aspect of the "reimagining" process as few can. Community association rules tend to limit what can be done to the outside of a house, so Howe's focus is often the home's interior. "Typically, our projects involve expansion, dramatic floor plan alterations, and heirloom quality construction throughout," says Howe. By heirloom quality, Howe means something that has been hand-crafted and worthy of being handed down to succeeding generations. "When everything is done, it's like walking into a new home," he says. "It is truly the best of both worlds. We preserve the finest of the home's original character, but with a floor plan and amenities conducive to how families live today." Howe's award-winning work has been featured in publications including e Wall Street Journal, Dwell, Bloomberg Businessweek, Barron's, Boston Design Guide, Nantucket Magazine, and New England Living. architecturaldevelopment.com BILL ABRAMS L IVING IN RANCHO SANTA FE THE LAST last few years, David J. Howe and his wife, Ying, have found the Southern California lifestyle very much to their liking — and to that of their two boys. A native of Boston, Howe always planned to move someplace warmer, and that plan was accelerated by lockdowns and the need for his family to spend time outside. Still, Howe already had his eye on Rancho Santa Fe. "It's a wonderful community. In many ways similar to where we were living outside Boston, though with much better weather," he adds with a laugh. But it was not only the mild weather that brought Howe and his family to the West Coast. Howe is an architectural designer and contractor with more than three decades of experience. His company, Architectural Development, Inc., located in Fairbanks Village Plaza, specializes in large-scale residential remodeling. "I've been doing this a long time, and I can see a home's potential almost immediately," says Howe. "To turn a property that's 30 years old into something extraordinary by today's standards, and to see my clients' satisfaction — it's a great feeling." Howe thoroughly enjoys his work, and a big part of that pleasure comes from collaborating closely with his clients. In terms of style, Indulge home Design by Architectural Development, Inc. David J.
