which celebrates its sesquicentennial this year. I had no idea that the founders of this cultural gem, known as "e Nat," recognized the importance of women's roles outside the home early on, and played a key role in establishing the Torrey Pines Natural Reserve and Anza Borrego State Park. On the charitable scene, Ranch & Coast is proud to sponsor the 115th Annual Charity Ball, chaired by Bridgett Brown on February 17 at the historic Hotel del Coronado, supporting Rady Children's Hospital's Palliative Care Program. I am also looking forward to a luncheon on February 12 honoring architect Lilian J. Rice at e Inn at Rancho Santa Fe, the first building she designed in the 1920s. e event, featuring a talk by Rice's official biographer, Diane Y. As much as I have savored this festive season, I am looking forward to the New Year, the chance to recommit to health, wellness, and fitness. It's an opportunity to make eating healthily and exercising regularly part of our everyday lives. And it's also a chance to live mindfully, a word I have heard so much in recent years. In this issue, I explore that concept at Park Hyatt Aviara's recently opened Miraval Life in Balance Spa Aviara, only the fourth Miraval in the United States. Fortunately for us, we only have to travel to Carlsbad to experience this state- of-the-art wellness retreat. Travel Editor Elizabeth Hansen checks in to Sensei Porcupine Creek, a luxurious, adults-only wellness resort in Rancho Mirage in the shadow of the Santa Rosa Mountains. She checks out feeling better prepared to welcome the New Year and commit to the long-term challenge of taking better care of herself. In "Fitness Fashion," I round up functional and stylish exercise apparel — for the gym, yoga and Pilates studios, hiking trails, ski slopes, golf, or tennis and pickleball courts. Several of these brands have their roots in San Diego County, including Vuori, founded by Joe Kudla in Encinitas; Civile Apparel, the pickleball brand launched in Solana Beach by Aubri Steele during the pandemic; and more recently, Beso Shade, activewear with sun protection from Rancho Santa Fe's Kelly Emberg. In "Swing and a Hit," Managing Editor Deanna Murphy profiles San Diego residents Arielle Solheim and Julia Roper, who created Goldie Byrd, a new line of golf clothing for women. Bill Abrams shares a fascinating story about the roots of the San Diego Natural History Museum in Balboa Park, ranchandcoast.com 16 JANUARY 2024 RANCH & COAST MAGAZINE
