e Star at Drove History M ercedes-Benz traces its legacy back to 1886, when Karl Benz produced the world's first motorized vehicle, the Benz Patent Motorwagen. Benz could also be credited as the machine's designer since the stylists who create today's automotive appearance were not employed in those early years. It didn't take long for the legendary German automaker to develop a classic style and an identity that has remained unchanged for 100 years. Wilhelm Maybach was a pioneering German automobile designer and engineer who was a protégé of Gottlieb Daimler and had co-developed the high-speed internal combustion engine. Maybach served as technical director for the 1901 Mercedes, a stately phaeton that defined the fundamental characteristics of the modern automobile and the first to carry the Mercedes name. In 1926, Gottlieb Daimler merged his Daimler-Motoren- Gesellschaft (DMG) with Karl Benz and formed Daimler-Benz AG for the company headquartered in Stuttgart. Gottlieb's DMG cars had been raced and sold by Emil Jellinek, who branded the machines "Mercedes," his daughter's nickname, and the new partners agreed to call their car company Mercedes-Benz. Daimler's sons Adolph and Paul were talented engineers who also had the design imagination to create the venerable three- pointed star enclosed in a circle. e three points symbolized Daimler engines powering transportation on land, sea, and in the air. After the firms merged, the star was incorporated into the laurel wreath used by Benz, and both star and logo have remained intact since 1926. Ferdinand Porsche also had a role in the newly formed Mercedes-Benz automotive enterprise. Porsche designed the glamorous and fast Mercedes S, SS, and SSK convertible sports cars, powered by supercharged 6.8- and 7.1-liter engines that dominated racing in the late 1920s. e beautiful cars also set the stage for the later 540K icon. Among all the visionary designers who were also brilliant engineers, Friedrich Geiger made his compelling statement before and after World War II. Geiger is credited with the 540K, the stunning roadster with sweeping coachwork and a supercharged engine that firmly established Mercedes-Benz as detour transportation PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF MERCEDES-BENZ USA Mercedes-Benz, a legend of design continuity BY BRIAN DOUGLAS ranchandcoast.com 82 APRIL 2026 RANCH & COAST MAGAZINE
