speech therapist, have teamed up with a new goal: ending homelessness. I share their very personal and poignant story. Managing Editor Deanna Murphy reports on Wildcoast, the binational environmental organization based in Del Mar that's working to clean up our shoreline and wetlands and protect wildlife. Contributor Gillian Flynn visits the historical Del Mar home of Del Mar Mayor Dave Druker and wife, Kristen, now on the market for the first time in nearly four decades. Finally, it's time to enjoy life outdoors. We highlight dishes served alfresco from Del Mar restaurants including Brigantine, Monarch Ocean Pub, Poseidon, and Salt + Lime. We also gather some of the latest trends in furniture and accessories to transform your backyard, dock, or deck into an open-air living room. Sand, surf, and the turf at the Del Mar oroughbred Club signal that summer is finally here. Opening Day at Del Mar has been a tradition ever since Hollywood singer and star Bing Crosby welcomed the first guests on July 3, 1937. It has been the place to win, place, or show off ever since, whether you are watching the horses or the hats. So, July is our traditional focus on Del Mar, where "the turf meets the surf," as Crosby once crooned. In this issue, we feature fashion for Opening Day or summer fêtes from Finnia Fine Clothing, Isola Boutique, Satori Collective, and Sea + Wander, as well as chic chapeaus from Carol Bader Designs. (I am wearing one of Bader's fanciful, floral creations on this page.) I share news of new ownership at Sbicca, the iconic Del Mar restaurant and gathering place founded 25 years ago by Dan Sbicca. New owners Jeff and Josephine Midlam and Craig Jimenez are now at the reins, saying they are committed to old favorites along with new offerings from Executive Chef Carlos Ramirez. In "New, Now, Next," we round up all the happenings around town, including recent debuts at Del Mar Plaza, equestrian events, and Opening Day parties including L'Auberge Del Mar's annual celebration featuring delicious bites and sips, live music, and dancing. Ranch & Coast returns as a media partner of the party. Del Mar is made up of fascinating and accomplished people like Rolf and Mary Benirschke, whom I profile in this issue.
